Types of Thunderstorms

Thunderstorm coming in over a grassy field If storms lead to storm DAMAGE, trust SERVPRO of North Pensacola to help!

Thunderstorms are common occurrences in Northwest Florida, especially during the spring and summer months.  While residents of Escambia County and surrounding areas are accustomed to thunderstorms rolling through, many may not be aware that there are different kinds of thunderstorms, and each carries a varying level of severity.  To best prepare for the effects that these storms can have, AND keep yourself and your loved ones safe, it is important to understand the various thunderstorm types:

Ordinary Cell

Also known as a “pulse” thunderstorm, this is a single-cell storm.  These types of thunderstorms are generally short lived, and while gusty winds or hail can develop, they are typically not severe.  Thunderstorms of this type do have the potential to develop additional cells under the right atmospheric conditions but are generally less severe and dangerous that other types.

Multi-Cell Cluster

These types of thunderstorms form when multiple ordinary cell storms, which are in various stages of development, merge together.  Depending on atmospheric conditions, these storms can vary greatly in the amount of rainfall dropped over any one area.  Multi-cell clusters can produce flash flooding conditions and should be closely monitored.

Multi-Cell Line (Squall Line)

When thunderstorms form in a line, they can sometimes stretch for hundreds of miles.  These multi-cell lines can produce damaging winds, hail, occasional tornadoes, and heavy rainfall.  Long lived, strong squall lines can produce considerable, widespread damage.

Supercell Thunderstorms

Supercell thunderstorms are highly organized, special single cell thunderstorms that can persist for many hours.  These storms are known to produce extreme winds, flash flooding, large hail, and account for nearly all the significant tornadoes in the United States.  The shape of the storm helps to determine the amount of precipitation generally associated with the supercell.  Storms like these can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous; oftentimes these will be associated with severe thunderstorm warnings from your local weather authority.

In the unfortunate event that a thunderstorm, or other weather phenomena, causes damage to your home or business, trust SERVPRO of North Pensacola to help.  Serving the communities of Ferry Pass, Cottage Hill, and surrounding areas, our team takes great pride in providing the highest possible level of customer service when disaster strikes.  To learn more about our storm damage response, request assistance, or for any other questions, please give us a call: 850-466-3076.

Hurricane Season 2022 is Here! Are you Prepared?

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

Atlantic Map with a sign reading Hurricane Season Ahead Storm Damages? Call SERVPRO of North Pensacola: 850-466-3076

It’s here.  The time of year that many Floridians dread: Hurricane Season.  Running from June 1st to November 30th, the Atlantic hurricane season ushers in a variety of tropical systems, ranging from low grade depressions up to major storms.  Residents and business owners in Northwest Florida know all too well the damage and devastation that these systems can cause, and how important it is to be PREPARED during this time of year.  So, what steps should you take in preparing yourself, your home or business, and your loved ones?

  • Have an emergency supply kit for each member of the family. Essentials for your kit will include a minimum of 3-day supply of nonperishable food and clean drinking water, flashlights, batteries, and a battery or crank powered radio.  Depending on the specific needs of your family, you may also need to include medications, children’s goods, games and activities, and pet supplies.
  • Have an evacuation plan in place. Always follow the guidance of local officials as it pertains to evacuation zones to keep yourself safe.  All members of your family should be aware of the evacuation plan and where you will all meet.  You may also need to consider researching lodging that is pet friendly if you have pets to evacuate with you.
  • Take steps to protect your property. This may include cleaning out rain gutters, removing debris from your yard, storing patio furniture and other loose outdoor items, and installing storm shutters on your windows.  Especially in high wind situations, reducing the amount of material that can become airborne is essential to helping protect your property.
  • Stay Weather Aware! Storms can grow and/or change direction very rapidly:  it is important to have a way to receive weather alerts even with power out and stay cognizant of where the storm is headed.  Rain and winds can extend a great distance from the center of the storm, so be prepared even if you are not directly in the path.

Once the storm has passed, SERVPRO of North Pensacola is equipped and prepared to help in the unfortunate event that your property did receive damage.  Serving the communities of Ferry Pass, Cottage Hill, and surrounding areas, SERVPRO of North Pensacola is “Faster to any size disaster.”  Call us, 850-466-3076!

Pensacola Storm Preparation – Power Outages

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

Lantern lighting a dark room with storm supplies Prepare for Power Outages Before They Happen!

When heavy storms strike, especially those that bring with them strong winds, one of the most common occurrences is loss of power.  Depending on the intensity of the storm, amount of geographical area affected, and population density of the area hit, the restoration of power can happen in as little as a few minutes or can take as long as several days.  With Northwest Florida being quite prone to heavy storms, hurricanes, and other weather phenomena that can result in power outages, it is important to take into consideration these power outage preparation tips:

  • If using a generator, be sure to run outdoors, and follow all the manufacturer’s safety and operational instructions.
  • Have plenty of flashlights and/or lanterns with batteries in your Emergency Preparedness Kit. Matches or a lighter are also valuable tools that can be useful in the case of a power outage.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that have a battery back-up system in place.
  • Keep a thermometer inside of your refrigerator; if temperatures within the refrigerator rise above 40 degrees, you will need to discard the affected food.
  • Never touch downed power lines. Contact local officials if you see downed power lines in your area.

Serving Ferry Pass, Molino, and surrounding communities, SERVPRO of North Pensacola is here and ready to help when storm damages strike.  To learn more about our services or request assistance, please give us a call at 850-466-3076.  We’re “faster to any size disaster”!

Types of Storm Damage

Two people standing in front of a house with stormy skies overhead Trust SERVPRO of North Pensacola to help with storm damage strikes!

Community members throughout Northwest Florida are all too accustomed to hearing Thunderstorm Watches, Tornado Warnings, and High Surf Advisories come across the airwaves, and understand the need to prepare for such incidences.  What, though, are some of the most common “storm damages” in our area?

Wind Damage

Hurricanes, Tropical Storms, Thunderstorms, and Tornadoes almost always bring along with them high winds.  Sustained high winds can lead to serious damages, including downed trees, destroyed roofs, and flying debris that can damage windows.  High gusty winds can topple large objects, blow open doors, and destroy the exterior of many structures.  These winds can drive water into normally dry areas, leading to flood risks, as well.

Flood Damage

Especially along the coastal areas, flooding is an ever-present issue during storms.  High surf can push into structures, debris can limit storm runoff, and heavy rains can quickly accumulate causing localized flash flooding.  Flood waters often carry debris and contaminants in them, making traveling through them extremely dangerous.

For storms of all shapes, sizes, and severity, know that SERVPRO of North Pensacola is prepared and equipped to help with any property damages you sustain.  Serving the communities of Pensacola, Ferry Pass, Gonzalez, and surround areas, our team is “Faster to Any Size Disaster,” offering 24/7/365 emergency response.  To learn more about our services, please give us a call at 850-466-3076!

How Can I Help Protect My Property from Storm Damages?

12/2/2021 (Permalink)

Hands covering a chalkboard drawing of a house with a storm overhead Trust SERVPRO of North Pensacola as your preferred cleanup and restoration vendor for storm damage services!

As we all know, bad weather is an inevitable occurrence Pensacola, Ferry Pass, and surrounding communities of the North Florida Panhandle.  Depending on the time of year, residents and business leaders are forced to deal with a variety of weather phenomena, including heavy rainstorms, tropical systems, and gusty winds.  These conditions take a toll on the properties exposed to them, leading to a need for cleanup, mitigation, and restoration services.  So, what can property owners do to help protect their structures and reduce the damages sustained from storms?

Inspection & Maintenance

Regularly inspecting your property for signs of damage, such as missing shingles, cracked siding, or window and door seal issues, and fixing as soon as possible will reduce the likelihood that these small issues become much more catastrophic during a heavy storm.  During your building inspection, be sure to check both the interior and exterior, including the roof, plumbing, and electrical components.  During the maintenance phase, focus both on repairing issues found during your inspection AND performing general duties, such as cleaning out rain gutters, trimming trees on the property, and removing any debris that could potentially damage your home or business during a storm.  Depending on the size, function, and age of your property, more frequent inspection and maintenance may be required, but it is recommended to perform these tasks a minimum of two times a year.

Planning & Preparedness

Those who live, work, and own property in Escambia County are no strangers to planning and preparing for severe weather, particularly hurricane season.  These same tasks, such as creating an emergency kit that includes food, water, and medications, knowing your evacuation route, and having a way to receive weather alerts can also apply throughout the rest of the year. Along with preparing for a storm, it is important to plan for after the storm, too.  In the case of property damage, you want to have a vendor that you can trust to arrive quickly, begin the mitigation process, and reduce the overall amount of damage sustained.  Choosing a professionally operated organization, with industry leading equipment, experience, and training will help make your damage “Like it never even happened,” faster.  SERVPRO of North Pensacola is your locally owned and operated cleanup and restoration vendor; ready to respond when storm damages strike.  Check us out online, read our reviews, and give us a call with any questions.  Make selecting SERVPRO of North Pensacola as your preferred damage restoration specialist a part of your storm preparation today!

How Familiar with Flooding Are You?

10/28/2021 (Permalink)

Graphic of Cars and Homes in Flood Waters Flood Damages? SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Here to Help!

One of the most damaging side effects of heavy storms is flooding.  Flooding is defined as “an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry,” and in the Panhandle of Florida can happen quite frequently in many communities.  Floods are the most common and widespread of all weather-related natural disasters, making it extremely important not only to understand the different kinds of flooding possible, but also your local flood zone definition.

Common Kinds of Flooding in Pensacola, Florida

River Flood – a river flood occurs when water rises over the top of a riverbank.  River flooding can almost immediately cause issues for structures located on the river, and if water levels continue to rise, have damaging results for properties downstream as well.

Coastal Flood – a coastal flood occurs when land areas along the coast are inundated with rising waters.  A combination of factors, including tidal patterns, rainfall, and land elevation can all play a role in coastal flooding.  Coastal flooding is of an even greater concern in our area, since much of the Panhandle of Florida is along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

Storm Surge – Storm surge is a variation of coastal flooding in which the wind, atmospheric pressure, and waves of a severe storm greatly increase the water level in coastal areas.  Highly common during hurricanes and tropical disturbances, storm surge can occur very quickly, and pose serious property and safety concerns.

Flash Flood – a flash flood is usually caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time in a localized area.  Flash floods can occur with very little warning and be extremely dangerous.  Clogged drainage systems and standing debris can contribute to the likelihood of flash flooding occurrences, restricting water run-off.

Is My Property In a Flood Zone?

It is important to understand that with the right combination of conditions, any property can be subject to flooding.  Areas are defined by their flood risk: either high, moderate, or low risk.  If you are interested in learning about the flood risk for your property, visit:

National Weather Service Announces Changes to Severe Thunderstorm Warnings

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

Cell Phone with Destructive Alert Pictured Always follow the guidance of local authorities when it comes to severe weather!

In an effort to better prepare people across the nation for severe weather threats, the National Weather Service will begin adding “damage threat tags” to severe thunderstorm warnings as of August 2nd, 2021.  Furthermore, the “destructive” tag distinction will trigger an emergency alert on mobile phones of all within the forecasted damage area.  Understanding the different levels of damage threat tags will help you be even better prepared in the case of a severe weather emergency:

  • “Destructive” Damage Threat – To fall into this category, a thunderstorm must be forecasted to produce 2.75-inch hail (baseball size) and/or 80 MPH winds. This is the distinction that will automatically trigger an emergency alert to mobile phones within the forecast area.
  • “Considerable” Damage Threat – To fall into this category, a thunderstorm must be forecasted to produce 1.75-inch hail (golf ball size) and/or 70 MPH winds.
  • “Base” or “Baseline” Thunderstorm – This is the standard severe thunderstorm warning that has previously been in use, and criteria for this category remains unchanged. A thunderstorm capable of producing 1.00-inch hail (quarter size) and/or 58 MPH winds.

These added damage threat tags encourage the public to take action, such as finding shelter and avoiding windows, when a considerable or destructive thunderstorm moves through the area.  Added warnings reduce the likelihood of injury to persons within the forecasted area and allow home and business owners within frequently affected areas to consider additional precautions for their properties, such as the installation of storm shutters.

If a baseline, considerable, or destructive thunderstorm causes property damage to your home or business, give the professionals at SERVPRO of North Pensacola a call for help.  Serving the communities of Molino, Cottage Hill, Ferry Pass, and surrounding areas, SERVPRO of North Pensacola has the equipment, expertise, and training to handle damages of all sizes.  Proud to be of service to Northwest Florida, our team is “Faster to any size disaster!”

Ceiling Boards affected by mold in Pensacola, Florida Has mold taken hold in your home or business? Call SERVPRO of North Pensacola for help!

Our community all too recently experienced what a severe tropical system can do with Hurricane Sally.  Many properties were damaged by recording breaking flood waters and elevated winds.  SERVPRO of North Pensacola has taken great pride in helping our community to recover from this storm event and continues to work tirelessly every day to remediate the damages throughout Pensacola, Cantonment, and surrounding areas.

As many properties are currently being restored to their pre-storm condition, another source of damage from Hurricane Sally may still linger: MOLD! The combination of organic matter and moisture creates the perfect environment for mold formation, and in humid climates, this mold growth can spread rapidly throughout a structure.    Proper drying of materials after a water damage has occurred is imperative to lessen the probability of mold growth, however, after a flood inducing storm like Hurricane Sally, this is often a tough feat to accomplish.

SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Here to Help if mold has taken hold in your home or business.  Our team has the credentials, experience, and equipment to remediate mold losses throughout the state of Florida.  We also have a reconstruction division, providing a one-stop-shop for your mitigation, remediation, and reconstruction needs.  To learn more about our services, please give us a call at 850-466-3076, “We’re faster to any size disaster!”

SERVPRO of North Pensacola hopes Molino pets stay calm during storms

Astraphobia, Fido and Fluffy

Astraphobia is the abnormal fear of thunder and lightning. Cats and dogs may have this phobia.

It’s normal to be scared of loud noises, strange aromas, and other storm attributes. This fear becomes a phobia only when the reactions are extreme.

If a phobic pet causes major damage, or a storm floods the house, call SERVPRO of North Pensacola at (850) 466-3076 any time. Emergency service is available 24/7/365.

SERVPRO® of North Pensacola put together information about astraphobia in dogs and cats so pet lovers can help their furry companions endure the storms.

What Happens

Cats and dogs are among the many animals that feel the change in barometric pressure before a storm. Longer-haired animals may also feel static electricity charges. The flashes of lightning and the sound of thunder upset many animals.

What to Do

If the pets spend time outdoors, make sure they can get inside. They should have identification in case they get lost.

If the pet wants to hide in a safe place, that’s good for everyone. Dogs that become so anxious they hurt property or themselves should be in crates – preferably one on which they can’t break teeth. Make sure your pet is crate-trained before a storm.

Some animals feel less anxiety if they are wrapped up in a special shirt or blanket. Others may need medication.

Animal trainers can condition pets to be calmer during thunderstorms.

Lightning Damage in Molino?

7/27/2020 (Permalink)

We deal with storm damage of all kinds in Pensacola.

How Lightning Forms

Did you know that lightning is the second highest cause of death by severe weather in the United States, and that lightning strikes are more deadly than hurricanes or tornadoes? Summer thunderstorms are common in Florida and most lightning flashes start inside the cloud. If the lightning is going to strike the ground it will form a channel pointing downwards inside the cloud toward the surface. When it gets close enough, roughly a hundred yards from the ground, trees and bushes start sending sparks up to meet the electricity in the cloud. When a spark from the tree or bush connects with the electrical energy in the cloud it causes the electrical current to surge rapidly down the channel to the object that sent the spark. SERVPRO® of North Pensacola has years of experience providing storm damage cleanup and restoration services in Molino and is ready to respond to any size emergency.

Thunderstorms in Ferry Pass?

6/4/2020 (Permalink)

Summer storm damage is no stranger to Pensacola.

68 Days of Thunderstorms a Year

Did you know that Pensacola, Florida averages 68.4 days of thunderstorms each year? According to the Climate Center at Florida State University, thunderstorms in Florida occur on average 80 days each year. All thunderstorms produce thunder, lightning, and hail, although hail is not a very common occurrence in Florida as the freezing level of a Florida thunderstorm is so high that the hail usually melts before it reaches the ground. It is easy to spot the beginning of a thunderstorm. Cumulus clouds will begin to form and grow vertically above 20,000 feet and then will rise up to between 40,000 to 60,000 feet at the mature stage of the storm. When the Waters Recede in Pensacola

9/12/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage is not always easy to spot.

Even though the phrase “what you don’t know won’t hurt you” exists, it is not always true. Sometimes what you don’t know can and will hurt you in Pensacola. After storms damage our property, many times we cannot see the whole picture to know what all is really damaged? From hidden foundation compromises to the beginning stages of mold growth behind the wallpaper, costs can begin to mount quickly and before you know it, you are in the middle of a spending spree that you never expected. After the waters recede and the damage becomes visible, homeowners are often left overwhelmed with the stresses associated with insurance claims and subcontractor costs and errors. Hurricane and storm damage can happen when you least expect it. Water can come flooding into your home or office and leave a mess behind.

When nature throws you a curve-ball, it doesn’t take a psychic to see you need relief. If or when this happens to you, call SERVPRO of North Pensacola and in a short amount of time, a friendly crew of professional cleanup and restoration personnel will quickly assess the damage and start the process of making your disaster look “Like it never even happened.”

Preparing for Storms in Ferry Pass

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

When storms are brewing, SERVPRO of North Pensacola will be there.

When storms are brewing, we may not think destruction is headed our way but sometimes the inevitable happens in Ferry Pass. While storms can be beautiful, they can turn deadly in just moments. Being prepared will help minimize harm to people and bring less damage to your property. If you find yourself in the aftermath of a storm, let SERVPRO of North Pensacola turn your chaos back to normal.

A few ways to prepare for a storm with strong winds are:

  • Have a flashlight readily available in case of a power outage
  • Board up windows and doors ahead of time, if possible
  • Secure loose items
  • Have an emergency kit ready including non-perishable foods and water
  • Make a plan ahead of time so your family will know what to do

Your local meteorologists will monitor the weather conditions in your area keeping you informed on what type of storm is happening. A storm Watch indicates they are watching for formations of specific types (flooding, severe thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes, etc.)  A storm Warning means there are property and life-threatening conditions occurring so you should take precautions.

Once the storm has subsided in Ferry Pass, please continue to be careful walking about your structure as there could be loose debris, and compromised structures, etc. Wear boots, and gloves to help protect yourself but above all call the professionals at SERVPRO of North Pensacola to make your loss “Like it never even happened.”

Hurricane preparation and boarding your windows in Pensacola

8/31/2019 (Permalink)

Boarding your windows can prevent further interior damage.

If you are familiar with hurricanes, you know that these storms include heavy winds, lots of water and the potential to be extremely dangerous. SERVPRO of North Pensacola wants to remind you that there are many ways to prepare for a hurricane, including finding a secondary shelter for safety, making sure you have plenty of bottled water and non-perishable foods, extra clothing and hygiene products, etc. If you have time before one hits, one of the more important things you should try to do is board up your windows and all other glass areas of your house!

Heavy winds can send objects flying, which can result in your windows, skylights, and sliding glass doors being blown out – and you will definitely have broken glass spread throughout your home as well as the water that gets in as a result of that. Make sure you measure out the correct amount of wood you will need to cover all glass areas. One tip that most people forget about is to paint the wood with an exterior primer and paint to prevent moisture damage. Secure the wood with galvanized screws and make sure your safety plan is in place. Hurricane Dorian is on its way and SERVPRO of North Pensacola wants you to stay as safe as possible, but do not hesitate to call us if our services are needed, especially if you have storm damage inside your home!

Be prepared when a storm hits your Yniestra home.

SERVPRO of North Pensacola has these tips for people in our community dealing with disabilities during an evacuation. You may want to consider, during times of flooding, to pack a bag to have ready in case the worst happens.

Plan for backup if you have your own car. A storm or flood may damage your car.

Ask your healthcare provider to suggest what specific devices you might need if you needed to evacuate due to an emergency:

  • Where can I get medical supplies?
  • How I do get accessible transportation?
  • If medical help is needed, where would I go?
  • Does this facility have a disability ramp access?

Items to bring with you:

  • Written list for emergency contacts
  • List of all medications, dosages, and allergies
  • Style & serial number of medical devices
  • Supply of medical equipment
  • Extra battery for a power wheelchair
  • Any cushions or padding
  • Wheelchairs, canes, braces, etc.
  • Medical bracelets
  • Medical insurance cards
  • List and/or supply of prescription medications

Our service animals are also affected by storm damage. For people who have service animals in Yniestra, consider:

  • Packing extra food, water, & other supplies for the service animal
  • Tell emergency responders that your service animal travels with you
  • Shelters and other buildings may not refuse entry to a service animal
