In this blog post, we'll explore how water damage can lead to mold growth and why it's crucial to rely on SERVPRO for water damage restoration.

The Link Between Water Damage and Mold Growth

  1. Moisture Source: Water damage creates a persistent source of moisture, providing an ideal environment for mold to thrive. Mold spores, which exist naturally in the air, need moisture, organic materials, and the right temperature to grow.

  2. Rapid Growth: Mold can start growing within 24-48 hours after water damage occurs. Once it takes hold, mold can spread quickly, affecting larger areas of your home or business.

  3. Health Concerns: Mold can release allergenic substances and mycotoxins that may cause health issues in individuals with mold sensitivities or compromised immune systems. It can lead to respiratory problems, allergies, skin irritation, and other health-related concerns.

  4. Structural Damage: Mold can weaken and deteriorate structural materials over time. It can damage drywall, wood, insulation, and other building components, leading to costly repairs.

Water Damage Prevention in Escambia County

Water damage in beachfront property SERVPRO experts called out to inspect and dryout a water damaged condo in Escambia County

Even the smallest water damaged areas have the potential to cause serious, and costly, structural damage.  Because of this, taking every possible precaution to prevent water damage to your home is imperative.  Follow these steps to better guard yourself, and your home, against the headaches of avoidable water damage:

  • Clean out roof gutters regularly. A clogged roof gutter does not allow rainwater to flow to the street; instead it can cause water to back up into your roof and walls.  This, over time, can not only damage the structural components of the residence, but also create the perfect conditions for mold growth.
  • Check appliances for leaks. Refrigerators, dishwashers, and washing machines all have hoses that if damaged or punctured can produce a large amount of water in a short amount of time.  Often these leaks will go undetected, as they are hidden by the appliance itself, but can cause serious damage to surrounding flooring and walls.
  • Maintain your landscaping. Many trees have root systems that can spread underneath home foundations and affect plumbing systems.  A leak below your home’s foundation can cause serious structural damages.
  • Take care of your plumbing. Regularly check for any leaks or pipe corrosion.  Consult with a professional plumber if you suspect your plumbing is out of date or damaged.

In the unfortunate event that you do experience a residential water damage, know that SERVPRO of Northwest Escambia County is Here to Help.  Our team is available for emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Give us a call at 850-466-3089, We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster!

When Was The Last Time You Flushed Your Water Heater?

8/15/2022 (Permalink)

Water heater inside of a garage Maintain you water heater to extend its life, and help protect yourself from water damage!

Common answers include "I don't know," "Never," or "Wait What?  You're supposed to flush you water heater?"

Because many home projects compete for your attention, water heater maintenance can be easily forgotten. Routine activities like running the dishwasher, showering or washing laundry depend on a properly functioning unit. Unseen problems may slowly develop into a catastrophe; so making sure to maintain your water heater is paramount.

How Should a Heater Be Flushed?

Performing a flush can help you identify problem areas. Before you start, establish a safety zone in the heater room. Then perform the following steps:

  • To avoid electric shock, make sure floors and all other room surfaces are dry, and turn off your main water valve.
  • Next, turn off the electric power circuit breaker or turn off the gas, depending on your heater's energy source.
  • Wait several hours for the tank water to cool off.
  • Attach a garden hose to your water heater drain, place the other end on your driveway, and open the tank drain so water can flow outside.
  • Repeat until the unit is empty, then detach the hose, close the drain valve, turn on the main water supply, and safely restore the power.

When Are Flushes Recommended?

Although your heater may be working, these appliances lose effectiveness over time as water sediment builds up, so yearly flushing helps maintain the units in optimal condition. Certain signs may indicate that you need to schedule a water heater flush sooner.

What Are Some Early Warning Signs?

One of the first signs can be strange noises coming from the tank. Water may take longer to heat or leaks may begin to appear under the heater. Water discoloration or unpleasant odors can also signal problems.

What if There Is a Problem?

If you experience problems or feel you cannot safely perform a flush, you may want to call for professional assistance. Some issues may need to be identified and resolved by an expert technician or plumber. You can receive the help you need and best solutions can also be evaluated.

Preventative yearly maintenance can maximize the life of your water heater and help identify problems while they are small enough to be fixed. That's always a good idea!

Hand cleaning leaves out of a rain gutter Cleaning out your gutters is just one way to protect your property while away on vacay!

With school out of session, many families plan and take vacation during the summertime months.  Whether taking a cross-country road trip to visit friends, going on a weekend getaway to a destination theme park, or any of the other wonderful activities you enjoy, you will want to make sure your home is safe and secure.  Locking doors, setting the alarm, and having a neighbor grab the mail are all common preparations you may make before a trip, but have you considered how to reduce the risk of water damages while you are away?  We have some great tips to help you do just that!

Turn off your water before you leave:  By turning off your main water valve to your home, you greatly reduce the risk of a water damage caused by a pipe failure or supply line leak.

Clean out your gutters: In case heavy rains take place while you are away, having your gutters cleared will allow the water to freely flow from your roof and away from your property.  Conversely, clogged gutters can cause water to back up onto the roof.

Do a “pre-trip” property check: This should include checking the plumbing below all sinks for any leaks, removing any debris from the yard that could cause standing water to not drain away properly, checking for any damage to window or door sills, and making sure all appliance supply lines are secure.

Have someone you trust check on your property: Perhaps that neighbor that is collecting your mail could also pop inside and make sure nothing has happened while you are away.  If damage has occurred, the faster it is discovered, the less likely additional issues will arise.

Man extracting water from a carpeted hallway Water Damage? Call SERVPRO of North Pensacola!

Water damages can strike any time of day, and on any day of the week.  Whether from a natural source, such as a heavy thunderstorm, or from manmade means, including leaking pipes, water damages are not only inconvenient, but can be both costly and stressful for the property owner.  Because water damages progress rapidly, often causing additional and secondary damages, our team is ready to respond and begin the mitigation process 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It is important to understand HOW water damages work, and the timeline they generally follow when left untreated, in order to successfully mitigate, remediate, and salvage as much as possible.

Water Damage Timeline

Within Minutes:

  • Water spreads throughout the property, both in visible and non-visible cavities.
  • Water is absorbed into drywall, flooring, and furniture.
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing staining on surrounding carpets.
  • Paper documents, photographs, and books absorb water and begin to swell.

Within 24 Hours:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Odor begins to develop.
  • Furniture may begin to swell and warp.

48 Hours to One Week:

  • Microbial growth begins and may start spreading.
  • Doors, windows, and studs begin to swell and warp.
  • Metal begins to rust.
  • Paint will begin to blister.
  • Conditions can become hazardous for occupancy.

Greater than One Week:

  • Structural safety is compromised.
  • Microbial growth intensifies.
  • Occupancy can be extremely unsafe.
  • Cleanup and Restoration costs increase dramatically.

The faster the mitigation process is started, the more potential there is to save and restore the property, versus costly demolition and replacement.  That’s why it’s important to choose the team that is “Faster to any size disaster”: SERVPRO of North Pensacola.  We take great pride in providing the highest possible level of customer service when disaster strikes, at all times of day and on all days of the week.  For service, or to learn more about our organization, please give us a call: 850-466-3076.

Where Did the Water Come From?

11/5/2021 (Permalink)

Water leaking from a washing machine When water damage strikes, call 850-466-3076 for help!

When water damage strikes, the first thing you will want to do is stop the water intrusion, reducing the amount of damage sustained.  Determining the source of the water may not always be immediately apparent, so it is important to be aware of some of the most “common culprits” for water intrusion and damage:

  • Appliance Failure – a leaking dishwasher, refrigerator, or washing machine can go unnoticed until the damage becomes heavy. Periodically check your appliances for any breaks in supply or drain lines, disconnected or loose lines, or any other malfunctions that could lead to a leak.
  • Plumbing Issues – piping issues, especially in older structures, can cause severe damages in a short amount of time. Watch for any signs of plumbing issues, including discoloration of water, odd changes in water pressure, or leaks underneath sinks that may signify a larger issue with your plumbing.
  • Rainwater Intrusion – clogged gutters, roof damages, or improperly sealed windows and doors can all allow rainwater to enter the interior of a structure. Water staining on ceiling or walls can signify a leak from the exterior, and should be addressed immediately to prevent further, larger damages.

Once the “where” of you water damage has been identified, know that SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Here to Help with the “what now.”  Our team provides emergency water damage response, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, striving to make your damage “Like it never even happened.”  To learn more, request assistance, or speak with a member of our team, please give us a call at 850-466-3076!

Categories of Water Damage

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

Pipe leaking water with SERVPRO logo When water damage strikes, trust the professionals at SERVPRO of North Pensacola to help!

Water damages can occur from a variety of sources: flood waters, broken or leaking pipes, supply line malfunctions, wind-driven rain, and the list goes on…

Although many residents and business leaders throughout the Pensacola community understand the many ways that a water damage can occur, many are unaware of the different categories of water damage.  Understanding the category, and the risks associated with each type of water, is imperative in determining the steps that must be taken during the remediation process:

  • Category 1, or “Clean Water” is water from a clean source, such as a broken water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon factors such as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.
  • Category 2, or “Gray Water” has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow or dishwasher overflow.  Just as category 1 water can quickly degrade, category 2 can also degrade into category 3 water over time.
  • Category 3, or “Black Water” is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

The category of water helps your remediation professional to determine what can be dried and salvaged, what must be discarded, and how much demolition may be needed in the structure.  SERVPRO of North Pensacola, with IICRC training, follows all industry standards in handling water damages, to help restore your property, and make your loss “Like it never even happened.”  To learn more about our services, or request help, please give us a call at 850-466-3076 today!

Water Damage Prevention in Pensacola, Florida

Men working to restore a residential water damage Water Damages? We're Here to Help. Call us at 850-466-3076 Today!

Stress, worry, costly: all words that come to mind on the topic of “Residential Water Damage.”  No one ever plans ON having a water damage at their home, however, it is imperative to plan FOR such an issue, as well as practice preventative measures to lessen the likelihood of occurrence.  There are many steps that can be taken to help protect your property against water damages, both from the interior (appliance leak, burst pipe) and exterior (coastal flooding, rainwater intrusion):

  • Periodically do a “wellness check” on your plumbing. Check for cracked or damaged seals, rusting pipes, and/or water staining underneath your pipes.  If an issue is found, correct it as soon as possible to keep a small leak from turning into a large water disaster.
  • Make sure both the supply and drain lines for household appliances, including the refrigerator, washing machine, and dishwasher, are all installed and fitted correctly. If there are any cracks, tears, or signs of dry rot present, replace the lines to limit the possibility of a break causing water damages.
  • Maintain the landscaping around your property. Heavy vegetation and debris blocking drains and ditches can cause water to back up, toward your house.  This issue can be compounded by heavy rains that produce flash flooding scenarios, so maintaining your property can be a great preventative measure to lessen the likelihood of flood intrusion.
  • Clean out your rain gutters. Clogged rain gutters, much like clogged drainage ditches, can allow water to back up.  Backed up water on your roof can easily lead to a leak inside your home, especially if your roof is older or not well maintained.

Although preparation can go a very long way in helping to prevent water damages, all too often, water damages DO happen.  When they do, trust SERVPRO of North Pensacola, your locally owned and operated water damage mitigation specialists, to help make your damage “Like it never even happened.”

To learn more or request service, please give us a call at 850-466-3076: We’re available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for you water damage emergencies.

How Do We Handle Water Damages?

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Window with water seeping in We're Here to Help with your water damage needs!

SERVPRO is known nationwide as a leader in the cleanup and restoration industry, including water damage remediation, but people often ask: HOW do we handle water damages?

The first step in our water damage remediation process is Emergency Contact.  With crews available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, SERVPRO of North Pensacola is ready and equipped to respond to your water damaged property no matter the time of day, or day of the week.  During this initial phase, information about the loss, such as approximate square footage affected, cause of the water damage, and type of flooring will be collected, to ensure that we arrive with the appropriate equipment, labor, and resources to get to work quickly.

Once on site, our team will begin inspecting and assessing the damages.  This initial inspection, or scoping, allows us to formulate the most efficient “plan of attack” to help restore your property.

After completing the initial inspection, SERVPRO of North Pensacola will, if necessary, begin the process of extracting any standing water.  Removing excess water quickly limits the amount of secondary damage potential, while reducing the amount of water available to soak into surrounding drywall and flooring.

Following the extraction process, SERVPRO of North Pensacola will place drying and dehumidification equipment, in accordance with IICRC training and standards.  We use industry leading drying equipment, in conjunction with moisture detection technology, to provide the best possible drying scenario in the shortest amount of time.

Once drying has been complete, our team will clean and sanitize the affected area.  We offer cleaning services for both the structure and the contents affected, reducing the likelihood of both microbial growth and odor formation.

At this point the mitigation process is complete, but SERVPRO of North Pensacola has an additional service available as well: Reconstruction.  Water damages often result in the need to remove drywall, ceiling, or cabinetry, and in these instances, as a Licensed General Contraction, we can also provide reconstruction services.

When water damage strikes, call SERVPRO of North Pensacola at 850-466-3076 for help.  Serving Cottage Hill, Gonzalez, Ferry Pass, and surrounding communities, SERVPRO of North Pensacola is Faster to Any Size Disaster!
